Product Description
Winner of American Airlines' and The Hawaii Visitors and Conventions Bureau Travel Journalism Award for "Best Hawaii Guidebook", Driving & Discovering Oahu's stunning photography is a testament to Eastman Kodak's rare sponsorship of such a project. Wishing to expand beyond the boundaries set by others in this field, Richard Sullivan designed a guidebook placing Oahu's spectacular scenics at the core, both to illustrate the island's singular beauty in a way that words simply cannot, and as a prequel for those who find themselves contemplating Oahu for its potential as the most beautiful adventure of their lives.
World-renowned Waikiki and Honolulu are merely the welcoming arms on the exquisite entity that is all of Oahu Island, which despite its smaller size, boasts more idyllic sandy beaches than any other in the Hawaiian archipelago. Driving & Discovering Oahu reveals a necklace of lovely deserted islands offshore of Oahu's Windward side which await lovers and modern day Captain Jack Sparrows, their secluded postcard-perfect beaches usually deserted on weekdays. Hidden waterfalls and hiking trails that wind through dazzling vistas are pictured within the book's pages with pin-point locations provided via clear maps and written directions. Honolulu's dazzling array of internationally celebrated restaurants, hotels, spas and nightspots wait enticingly at day's end to rejuvenate the weary from theirĀ  unforgettable adventures. Driving & Discovering Oahu contains no endless, quickly outdated lists of restaurant and hotel ratings, since websites like Travelocity.com provide up-to-the-minute information on these that no printed guidebook can compete with. What Driving & Discovering Oahu uniquely delivers is something no other Hawaii guidebook does: splendid inspiration and monumental adventure, utilizing text and photography entwined from the same mind, with flawless directions leading visitors directly to it all. 5 out of 5 stars One of the best travel gems!   March 11, 2002

Where was this book when I was planning my trip to Oahu?? I actually ran across it upon my return and immediately ordered it to plan my next trip.

This is one of the most concise and easiest guidebooks I have ever seen! It actually doubles as a great coffee table book loaded with gorgeous pictures and information on every area on the island.

The book literally takes you on a tour around Oahu, dividing the island's shores beginning with the South Shore. Filled with graphic organizers of parks in that particular shore to weather-it is handy to glance for quick info. A detailed description of sites accompany pictures and info on traveling. There is just so much info jammed in the pages, it is hard to list all of it but it is organized neatly! The maps are right on the money!

5 out of 5 stars The only guide you need!   March 25, 2001

My husband and I had previously visited Oahu with our parents and done the usual Waikiki Beach/Pearl Harbor routine that all tourists seem to do. Our decision to go back to Oahu for our honeymoon was based entirely on this fantastic book. It showed us how much we had missed on our previous trips. Instead of spending a week on crowded Waikiki Beach, we spent our time on beautiful remote beaches or hiking through the jungle to a waterfall. This book has info that no other guide has. Every location has color pictures and a detailed map on how to get there. This book made our trip to Oahu our best vacation ever. Don't bother buying any other guide.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the perfect get around guide to Oahu   June 7, 2002

If you are going to go to Oahu, there are two things you must have... a rental car and this book. Honolulu is is crowded and congested. Walk the strip of Waikiki, make the International Market Place the first place you stop on your trip (get your Aloha atire) and last things you do on your trip, (get your souviners) and then spend the rest of your trip outside of Honolulu. (Of course, if you like hookers and drugdealers, spend your nights in Chinatown.)
This book is structured very well. You can seach this book by beaches, shore lines, trails, waterfalls, or uninhabitted islands. Almost anything that is worth seeing, is in this book.
The Lonely Planet has an Oahu book that is a great conterpart to this one. Pick up both of these books, and you will be ready for your trip!

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave for Oahu without this book!   October 30, 1998

This is the best guidebook for touring Oahu that I have seen. Oahu receives millions of tourists each year. This guidebook will give you detailed driving or bus directions to many off the beaten path places you will have to yourself. I found the driving directions easy to follow. The book also shows beautiful, full color photographs of different places around the island to visit. As an added bonus, the author shows you on his maps exactly where he took those photos. This book will show you a side of Oahu that most tourists miss. You will not regret purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun & useful! Perfect island road safari.   January 27, 2005

This is a fun guide to some great spots on the island of Oahu. We used the accurate maps in favor of a more detailed, but bulky, road map. It was like having a friend with us who was pointing out neat routes and points of interest. It really made our trip interesting and allowed us to take full advantage of having a car. Even after the trip, we enjoy looking up where we visited and sharing the details with friends.

I recommend this as part of your travel kit for Oahu. Most guides are too general to Hawaii or too specific to Honolulu, but this one focuses so nicely on the entire island of Oahu and the highlights! It was also nice to use when we decided to have Hawaii movie night since the book notes where movies were filmed.
